The decision for me to work on an entertainment radio station was quite logical having a musical background and knowing most bands from Abba to Zappa. I had a slight English accent at the time which made me very popular with the SWF 3 listeners. Hence the different programmes I was soon to be hosting at different times of the day and at the same time being reponsible for my own music selection (those were the good old days of radio...!)

As much as I liked SWF 3 and my colleagues I received an offer I could not refuse and made a move to help start up one of Germany´s first private stations RPR which is now the most listened to private radio station in the South West of Germany. Not only was I responsible for music programming but had my own slot every day and was out on stage at all local trade fairs representing the station.

For personal reasons I made a move to Berlin in 1989 to work for RIAS 2 back together with some ex-colleagues from SWF 3. As a well as regularly hosting a very popular request show I was the only presenter with his own show every day of the week. RIAS 2 Popcorn from 7 to 9 pm. RIAS stands for Radio In American Sector and we were financed purely by the allies to broadcast West infomation and music into the East. This was the most popular station in Berlin with over 30 % listener ratings east and west but with the fall of the Berlin Wall on the 9th of November 1989 our days were numbered. Midnight of the 30th of May 1992 meant the closing down of this legendary station and the start of a private station RS2 on the same frequency.

I decided to take an offer from SFB (Sender Freies Berlin) to freshen up their SFB 2 re-naming it Radio B2. I spent 5 years here on the air everyday and also co-responsible for the complete music programming. When political reasons forced SFB to join up with ORB (Ostdeutsche Rundfunk Brandenburg) to form RBB (Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg), Radio B2 was one of the programmes which was cut.

By this time radio in Germany had changed into CHR (Contemporary Hit Radio). Playing the same Top 40 songs over and over again and repeating the same station slogans everytime a station ID came up. Very clever computers took over the music selection and I decided to give up a job I loved for very many years rather than be part of this machinery. Music computers and not video killed us radio stars.
